In psychotherapy I try to facilitate my client to the best of my ability by listening emphatically to what he/she has to say. As I was trained in using different techniques and theories, I choose those which are best suited for facilitating my client. Most often the Relations Theory which formed part of my training as psychologist at Unisa can accommodate the problems/barriers/trauma of my client.

The Relation’s Theory focuses  on nine different aspects of your self: your ego; self; identities; self concept; self talk; self realisation; attribution of meaning; experience and involvement. This theory makes it possible to do an intrapsychic journey into the self and trying to uncover and address those aspects of the self which negatively affect a person’s being.

Depending on the client’s needs I use different techniques like the Gestalt therapy; draw a person; make a collage; write down your story; etc.

My doctorate in which I used autoethnography (story) as methodology gave me wonderful insights  to use in psychotherapy—I for instance realise the importance of story in a person’s life.
